I have been putting off doing this for weeks, ya’ll.
“I need to see more. I need to see more. I need to see more,” I kept telling myself as I would comb the LHSAA site and look at scores and find different things to nitpick from around the area.
OK, I tap out. I can’t do it anymore. It’s time to do our first Power 5 for baseball. This will be a chore. I think there is so much talent in the area that it’s hard to sort who is who and what is what.
But it’s the job, so let’s go!
BAYOU REGION POWER 5: Week of March 24
- South Terrebonne – The Gators are No. 1 in our Power 5 because they are a defending State Champion with a lot returning. The recent results aren’t great. They’re 4-4-1 in their past 9 games. But in district, South Terrebonne has scored 24 runs and has looked every bit like a team that is about to surge and make another run.
- Assumption – We forget about Assumption locally, but the Mustangs are a force – the type of team that can very easily make it to Sulphur. The Stangs are 13-5 and have some big-time wins over some really quality opponents. But what we like about Assumption most is that they have played 2 3-game series with quality opponents and have won them both. Winning series is the name of the game in prep baseball in Louisiana. Assumption can do that.
- Thibodaux High – Thibodaux is smoking hot. The Tigers are 14-6 and after a 1-4 start to the year, they’ve gone 13-2 with wins over the likes of Vandebilt, Pope John Paul, and now Central Lafourche. The Tigers would maybe be No. 1 in this list, if we’re being honest. But we can’t overlook that South Terrebonne beat the Tigers 19-6 in a head-to-head meeting and that Assumption, too, trumped them head-to-head. That has to count for something, right? But if Thibodaux stays hot, they can easily take the top spot.
- E.D. White – If I would have made my first Power 5 list on March 1, E.D. White would have probably been No. 1. The Cardinals got off to a torrid start to the season and were on cruise control. But they have since cooled off a little, which puts them in the 4-spot. E.D. White has lost 5 of their past 8 and 7 of their past 12. That has taken a little bit of the shine off the fast start. Just a little, though. That team can really play and will be tough to beat in a 3-game series because of how smooth ace Tyler Weimer is.
- Terrebonne – To me, the last spot in the local Power 5 was between Terrebonne and Vandebilt with Central Lafourche maybe just a smidge behind those 2 but with a chance to surge into the rankings in the coming weeks. We go with Terrebonne this time because the Tigers got a head-to-head win over the aforementioned Terriers on Thursday night. Coach Cam Pierce’s team is now 13-7 and has wins over Parkview, Opelousas Catholic and Vandebilt. That’s all teams who compete to be in Sulphur annually. That’s good stuff. Their resume is what put them into the list.
