The Nicholls baseball team is one series victory away from winning the 2023 Regular Season Southland Conference Title.

The Colonels took 2 from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi this weekend, surrendering the first game of the series before coming back with a vengeance, taking 2-of-3 to improve to 14-7 in the league, two clear of the pack heading into the final weekend of the season.

The Colonels will next face the University of New Orleans. With one win in that series, they will clinch a share of the Southland Conference Title. With 2, they will guarantee the outright title and the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament two weeks from now.

On Sunday, the Colonels showed their ability to overcome adversity and find a win. Corpus got 4 runs in the 1st inning, chasing starter Tyler Theriot from the game before he recorded an out. But Nicholls stayed poised and calmly battled back, plating 4 of their own in the bottom 2 to tie the game, then 4 more in the bottom 3 to go up for good.

Chase Gearing pitched in relief and was outstanding, working 5.1 innings, allowing just 2 runs, both unearned.

Corpus scored those unearned runs in the 5th to make it 8-6, but the Colonels slammed the door shut with closer Cade Evans recording the final 10 outs of the game to secure his 6th save. Parker Coddou had a multi-hit game for the Colonels, as did Garrett Felix and Kade Turnage. Xane Washington had 3 RBI, and Edgar Alvarez and Gerardo Villarreal both had 2 RBI in the win.

Nicholls is now 2 games clear of Northwestern State and Incarnate Word who are chasing them. Northwestern State faces Southeastern this weekend. Incarnate Word faces Corpus Christi.

The Colonels will be at New Orleans, who is 11-10 and who could tie the Colonels with a 3-game home sweep.
