OK, so we took a little heat for our Preseason Power 5 rankings, but by and large, I think we did pretty good.

But we do have a week’s worth of games to use as a guide, so it’s time to adjust.

Here’s our Week 2 Power 5, and our Week 1 Players of the Week.

Week 2 Power 5 Rankings:

  1. E.D. White – Duh. We had E.D. White ranked No. 1 coming into the season and all they did was beat the previously No. 2-ranked team by 38 points in the season opener. Statement made. Message received. The Cardinals are not willing to give up that crown as the top local team just yet. That team is still really damned good.
  2. Terrebonne – The Tigers move up from No. 3 to No. 2 after a dominant Week 1 win over South Terrebonne. Kylan Billiot got going and the Tigers’ defense got plenty stops. The Tigers have a big game coming up this week with John F. Kennedy. That’s a game the Tigers could have – and probably should have – won last fall, but let slip away. Getting that one in the bag this year would be a great sign of growth and would add even more momentum to a team that’s learning how to win.
  3. Assumption – The Mustangs didn’t even make our original Top 5 list, but they made a big statement in Week 1, dominating Donaldsonville to make a big leap forward to the No. 3 spot. Assumption is always that mystery team locally. They struggled at times in the preseason but seemed to have all of the pieces put together for Week 1 in a dominant win.
  4. Vandebilt – Do not sell all of that Vandebilt stock just yet. They ran into a buzzsaw on Friday at E.D. White, yes. But this is still going to be a very good football team. Expect them to play much better on Friday against Central Lafourche as they continue to find their rhythm in the early portion of the season.
  5. South Lafourche – I had 4 teams to pick from for the last spot: South Lafourche, Thibodaux, CCA and Houma Christian. I went with the Tarpons because they were at No. 5 last week and didn’t deserve to fall out of the rankings after a road win. But I can assure you that those other teams are nipping at their heels and we could see a lot of movement in next week’s rankings.

OK, now let’s hand out Players of the Week:

Week 1 Offensive Player of the Week: Kylan Billiot, Terrebonne – Boy, that didn’t take long, did it? Billiot had a huge game on Friday against South Terrebonne, logging 7 catches, 100+ yards and 4 touchdowns, showcasing why he is one of the top playmakers in the entire state of Louisiana. This isn’t the last time he’s going to win this award.

Week 1 Defensive Player of the Week: Ty’Reece Edwards, South Lafourche – Have a day, Ty’Reece Edwards. In his first-ever varsity game as a 9th grader, Edwards made play after play for South Lafourche. He got a red zone interception on Friday, made a huge open-field fourth down tackle to create an extra possession and was all over the field helping his team. What a debut. Goodness, kid. What a debut.

Quote of the Week: “We turned it up. There’s no question.” -E.D. White coach Kyle Lasseigne when asked about his team’s physicality on Friday against Vandebilt
