Can you believe it? We’re already neat the halfway point of the high school football season.
With 4 weeks down and now just 6 to go, we have another Power 5 with not a whole lot of movement from recent weeks.
Let’s check it out.
WEEK 5 POWER 5 RAKNKINGS
- E.D. White – The Cardinals are a wrecking ball. After 3 very impressive wins to open the season, the Cardinals were even more impressive and dominant on Friday, scoring a 50-point win against a 5A opponent who has some quality athletes. Geez, those guys are impressive. So much respect and love for Coach Kyle Lasseigne, his staff and his players on a job so well done.
- Terrebonne – The Tigers are on to something right now. They rolled past H.L. Bourgeois and made a statement, dominating their rivals in a showcase of their talent. Now sitting at 3-1 and with a couple favorable games coming up, the Tigers have a great chance to continue to build confidence.
- Vandebilt – Yes, the Terriers lost on Friday, but how can we move those guys down more than just 1 spot? They played Lutcher and the ballgame was relatively close with the Bulldogs earning an 18-0 win. The Terriers have another rough one Friday against St. Charles, but they’ll be better for those games later in the schedule.
- South Lafourche – The Tarpons move up a spot in our rankings after improving to 3-1 with a gutsy win over a South Terrebonne team that is better than their 0-4 record would indicate. Lutcher will be a bear on Friday, but the Tarpons head to the river with some momentum on their side.
- Assumption – The Mustangs round out our Power 5 coming off a loss, but it was a respectable loss at the hands of a very quality St. James team. The Mustangs have a chance to make a big statement this week against an improved Morgan City team.
DTB CLOTHING PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Offensive Player of the Week – Jake Sternfels – E.D. White – Sternfels was as good as ever on Friday, anchoring the Cardinals’ offense in a dominant win. Sternfels was a weapon with his legs, was a weapon with his arm and continued to showcase the skills that make him arguably the top quarterback in our area on a team that has a great shot to make a deep playoff push.
Defensive Player of the Week – Jalil Matthews – Terrebonne – Matthews is all over the field every, single Friday night for the Tigers and he earns Player of the Week this week after being a force for the Tigers against H.L. Bourgeois. He’s one of those kids who truly could earn this award every week. He’s that good.
Quote of the Week: “We’re headed in the right direction. I believe in the group we have.” CCA football coach Jesse Turner discussing his team’s start to the year.
