5 TAKES FROM MUSTANGS WIN OVER TARPONS

1. MUSTANGS HAVE MORE THAN JUST JACOBS – All week long, we heard folks in the community talk about how tough it would be to slow down or stop Assumption running back Chase Jacobs. The Tarpons did a nice job slowing him down. But they had no answer for Reece Turner, who probably had close to 250 yards rushing tonight. What a performance.
2. 3RD AND 30 … YOU HAVE TO GET OFF THE FIELD – Assumption had a 3rd and 30 play in the second half from their own 10 yard line at a pivotal moment in the game when it looked like the Tarpons were trying to take some momentum back. Instead of punting, they turned it into a 90-yard touchdown pass and a play that just felt like a huge momentum shift in the game. The South Lafourche defense has been night and day better this year versus last. But on 3rd and 30 in the second half, you have to get off the field. That’s an inexcusable bust. Can’t happen.
3. DAY FOR THE OFFENSIVE LINES – Both offensive lines dominated on Friday night. The Assumption offensive line got a push and held blockers, letting Jacobs and Turner bounce outside. When they went into that unbalanced shotgun set, the Tarpons had no answer. On the opposite side, the South Lafourche offensive line was just as good and did everything necessary to win, opening up huge running holes for playmakers to make plays. Both teams won on the offensive line of scrimmage. Both teams lost at the defensive line of scrimmage. The Mustangs just got a stop at the end.
4. INJURIES PILING UP FOR BIG BLUE – South Lafourche is beat up. Tyler Autin left Friday’s game with a high ankle sprain. That’s a big blow. Kade Nelson left injury with an ankle/foot injury. That’s a big blow. Kayden Jarvis is out for the season. Terrance Pitre missed the game with a rib injury. Meathead Dardar was walking gingerly after the game. The injuries are just starting to pile up. Maddox Camardelle left early with an injury.
5. MUSTANGS EARN CHARACTER WIN – Last year, Assumption was in a ton of close district games and they pretty much lost ’em all. To get this one in Galliano on Friday night is a big win for Coach Broussard and his staff. That was a big-time win.
6. KAMDEN BOURG IS A WEAPON – How many times has Kamden Bourg been streaking down the middle of the field wide open in the past 2 seasons? Teams know he’s out there and still can’t stop him. Bourg went for well more than 100 yards tonight in a huge game.
