And down the stretch we come!
The high school football season is getting closer to the playoffs and several local teams are going to be competing to try and get in throughout the next 3 weeks.
The Power 5 is easy to pick at the top, but harder to pick towards the bottom, but let’s dive in and get going:
Week 8 Power 5 rankings:
- E.D. White – The Cardinals keep on keeping on. They are now 7-0 and have not yet been challenged. It’s almost to the point now where Coach Kyle Lasseigne is probably hoping for a 4-quarter game in one of the team’s final 3 games of the season just to see how his team responds before the playoffs. It likely won’t be tomorrow against Berwick. But the Cardinals will be challenged heavily in Weeks 9 and 10, so time will tell.
- Vandebilt – I move Vandebilt all the way up to No. 2 on the list this week because I think they are peaking at the right time and are playing their best football when it matters most in the final stretch run of the season. Division II Select’s bracket is tough. But the Terriers will be a rough out.
- Terrebonne – The Tigers drop a spot, but have a big chance to earn back the No. 2 spot on Friday at East St. John. It didn’t go their way against Destrehan, but the Tigers had some chances in that game that they just didn’t take advantage of. Don’t give up on the Tigers just yet.
- Assumption – The Mustangs are, believe it or not, playing for a chance to lock down at least a share of the district title on Friday in a game with Lutcher. If they are able to win that game, they would be in the driver’s seat with 2 games left in the year. It’s a tall order, but stranger things have happened. That will be a fun score to watch on Friday night.
- Thibodaux – The Tigers round out our Power 5 after getting a win over H.L. Bourgeois. Thibodaux heads into a must-win over Central Lafourche on Friday and they’re a team that has huge playoff implications coming down the final stretch run of the season.
Now, let’s hand out some hardware.
WEEK 7 DTB CLOTHING OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Houma Christian School halfback Micah Callais – Callais was huge in Houma Christian’s win over Riverdale. Playing both ways and doing a little bit of everything for his team, Callais was a force in helping Houma Christian School earn a vitally important win for their playoff positioning.
WEEK 7 DTB CLOTHING DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – South Lafourche defensive back Landon Jarvis – Playing defense for the first time on the season, Landon Jarvis showed out, recording 2 huge interceptions for South Lafourche during their win over Morgan City. Big-time stuff – especially when considering that he was playing in the secondary, in part, because of the season-ending injury to his older brother.
