The Louisiana High School football season kicks off its Week 9 tonight and local teams are rising and falling pretty quickly. No one has been able to knock E.D. White off their perch, but 2 local teams got huge wins that have put themselves in great spots with the playoffs near.

WEEK 9 POWER 5 RANKINGS:

  1. E.D. White – The Cardinals are 8-0 and no one has been able to challenge them for a full 48 minutes just yet. That changes on Friday with Sam Houston coming in. They are a 6-2 Class 5A team and the Cardinals will have to play well to take care of business in that one. That will be a fun score to track and follow throughout the night on Friday.
  2. Terrebonne – The Tigers are No. 2 in our power 5 after an absolutely huge win at undefeated East St. John on Friday. Terrebonne has another huge game on Friday at home with Thibodaux – a game that is going to give the Tigers a chance to lock down a home playoff game in a brutal Division I non-select bracket.
  3. Assumption – The Mustangs are also a team on the move. The Mustangs got a huge win over Lutcher on the road on Friday to improve to 6-2 on the season. Coach Wil Broussard has done an outstanding job with that team getting them to be playing their best ball at a critical time in the year. They have a great chance to keep pushing forward with a home game against Vandebilt on Friday.
  4. Vandebilt – The Terriers have a chance to cause chaos in our local 4A district and prompt a possible 3-way tie at the top if they can take down Assumption on Friday. That is going to be one hell of a game. The Terriers – like the other 3 teams ahead of them in this list – are playing their best ball right now and are rounding into form.
  5. Thibodaux – The Tigers survived a scare on Friday, scoring a 2-point win over Central Lafourche. Thibodaux has to win one of their final 2 games to have a shot at the postseason, but boy, that’s not going to be easy. The Tigers face Terrebonne on Friday, then Destrehan next week. Ouch.

DTB CLOTHING PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Offensive Player of the Week – E.D. White quarterback Jake Sternfels – Cardinals’ quarterback Jake Sternfels continues to be a force for the Cardinals. In Friday’s win, he rushed for 4 touchdowns and was efficient as a passer, helping power the Cardinals to another dominant win.

Defensive Player of the Week – Central Lafourche linebacker Ryan Naquin – Central Lafourche gave Thibodaux a huge scare on Friday, and the disruptive play of linebacker Ryan Naquin was a big reason why. He recorded 7 tackles, several tackles for loss, a sack and an interception in the game, doing an excellent job to help the Trojans.

Quote of the Week: “It’s a hell of a lot better being on the home sideline over here. That’s for sure.” St. Louis coach Brock Matherne, on coaching at South Lafourche as an opponent for the first time after serving as an assistant coach at the school previously.
