5 TAKES AS SOUTH LAFOURCHE ROLLS PAST ELLENDER
- Domination up front – South Lafourche beat up Ellender at the line of scrimmage tonight. There is no other way around it. The offensive line got a push and controlled the line of scrimmage. The defensive line pressured the quarterback and got penetration, despite being short-handed. I could talk about guys like Carson Orgeron and Meathead Dardar until the cows come home (and we will get to them later), but the game is won up front and the Tarpons kicked their ass at the line of scrimmage tonight.
- A special play from a special player – The long touchdown run that Carson Orgeron had tonight was just the perfect depiction of why that kid is a special player. First the vision: he saw the pocket break down and decided to run. Then the shiftiness: the kid break the ankles of just about every defender on the field on the way to the end zone. Then the speed: Carson was running past defenders into the end zone. Goodness. That kid is a Saturday player. Coach Rebowe, give me a ring. You have my number. I will get you in touch with BJ Young. Offer that kid a scholarship. He can help you. Kid is a football player.
- Meathead and a possible mini-Meathead? – Landin Dardar had another huge game on Friday, dominating the game with his power running, routinely getting into the second and third levels with bruising, physical runs. But what was equally impressive is the running of freshman Kentrell Shepard, who ran hard and made some big plays in garbage time. Dardar is a 10th grader. Shepard is a 9th grader. Landon Jarvis is also a good back. He’s a 10th grader. The offensive line is young with freshmen and sophomores in the starting lineup. Woo-wee, BJ Young has some fun tools to play with for a while.
- Rough times for Ellender – It was not hard to see why Ellender is 0-9. The team is just snakebitten. They committed untimely penalties on Friday, had some execution issues and were just having a hard time getting out of their own way. But, with all of that having been said, I give credit to Coach Haslitt and his staff because the boys competed hard and played with sportsmanship. They didn’t have any lapses in discipline, despite the rough season and I’m rooting for those guys going forward. Have a good offseason and shake back.
- Week 10 is a big one – South Lafourche’s Week 10 matchup with Vandebilt Catholic is a huge game. For South Lafourche, a win means a guaranteed playoff berth. For Vandebilt, a win would likely lock up a home playoff game. The kids know one another. The rivalry there is somewhat unspoken, but is intense. That is going to be a fun football game. The key, to me, will be two-fold: Can the Terriers slow down the Tarpons’ running game and can South Lafourche slow down Jaylon Coleman?
- I love Cesar Gonzales – I absolutely love Cesar Gonzales. He is probably my favorite player on this football team outside of my Biddy guys. On Friday, Cesar scored a 2-point conversion on the ole Les Miles flip fake, and I couldn’t have been happier for the kid as he juked and jived into the end zone. He also made a tackle on a kick return. The kid just appears to have great energy and I am a fan. You are a fun football player to watch, kid. We don’t often say that about kickers.
- BJ lets ’em hang – BJ Young showed his gonads in the 2nd quarter on Friday. Up just 14-7, Young and the Tarpons went for it on fourth down deep in their territory late in the first half of the game. If the Tarpons get stopped there, there’s a better than good chance that the Patriots use a short field to score and tie the game 14-all at halftime. But instead, the Tarpons converted, punched one in, then forced a turnover and punched another one in and made it 29-7 at halftime. That, to me, was the turning point of the game. Let ’em hang, BJ. I see you!
- Stop asking me; I don’t know – Stop asking me if South Lafourche will make the playoffs if they lose in Week 10. I don’t know. Hell, stop asking BJ Young, too. He doesn’t know, either. No one does. If the Tarpons win, they’re in. But if they lose, they will need a ton of help from schools around the state. There’s just no way for anyone to predict what might happen.
