It was good to be back in the gym at the Lafourche Parish girls’ basketball jamboree on Wednesday, checking out South Lafourche, Berwick, Central Lafourche, Assumption, Thibodaux and E.D. White.
The Tarpons toppled Berwick; the Mustangs beat Central Lafourche and Thibodaux beat E.D. White.

5 TAKES FROM LAFOURCHE PARISH GIRLS’ BASKETBALL JAMBOREE
- It’s only a jamboree (thank God) – The play was sometimes sloppy in all 3 games tonight. It’s only a jamboree – thankfully. This was a good starting point for all 6 participating teams, but I saw a lot of missed layups, a lot of turnovers, and some kids who are not all the way in basketball shape just yet.
- Caroline has an extra gear – Caroline Adams has an extra gear. She has a gear that 99.9% of the players that she will face this season will not have. On the day that she signed with Nicholls State University, Adams played super well and was a huge difference maker in helping keep her team in the game with Thibodaux. I could argue that the biggest challenge in coaching Adams this year will be getting her to be MORE selfish. She is such a willing passer and good teammate that sometimes, it impacts the fact that she’s a dominant player who can take over the game.
- Lady Tarpons have more depth – South Lafourche was without several of its best players on Wednesday, but they were still able to get a comfortable win over Berwick thanks in large part to some newfound depth that Coach Darian Jenkins has built this offseason. That’s good to see.
- Young Trojans will be dangerous – Central Lafourche is younger and less experienced this year than they were last. But do not count out the Trojans in our local 5A district. The Trojans are still very athletic and look like they are going to be a very competitive team, playing super competitively with a solid Assumption team. That’s going to be a fun team this season.
- Thibodaux a sleeping giant – Thibodaux should be a really good team this season. The Tigers made the playoffs last season and have a lot of key pieces back this winter. They were a little sluggish and sloppy at times on Wednesday, but you could see that with a little oil on some of the squeaky wheels, the Tigers are going to be A-OK. E.D. White is a scrappy bunch. To get that win is a good sign.
- Bonus rules are interesting – The new bonus rules in high school basketball are interesting. Teams shoot 2 shots per quarter after the 5th foul. I don’t know if I like the rule yet, but it was sure interesting seeing it put into action. Will be fun to see how things evolve as the year goes on.
