A former Nicholls men’s basketball player is headed to the land Down Under.
New Orleans native and former Colonels All-Southland player Latrell Jones signed with Geelong United this past week, a team in the Australian National Basketball League.
Jones played 2 seasons with Nicholls after transferring from Portland. He averaged 11.9 points per game in 2021-2022, then averaged 15.0 points per game last season – one of the leaders of a Colonels roster that was in the upper half of the Southland Conference.
Jones had a tryout this summer with the Pelicans, and now will be taking his talent over seasons to begin his professional journey. He said he is excited to get started.
“I’m excited to be part of a dynamic group of men with elite skills that coincides to one goal which is winning,” Jones said. “Coming together is just the start but staying together is growth and development.”
Geelong coach Grant Wallace said Jones is a talented player who is going to be a big piece of the team’s plans in the upcoming season.
“We are extremely pleased to secure the signing of Latrell to our program,” Wallace said. “He had a remarkable collegiate career, and he comes highly recommended as a person of great integrity on and off the floor. Latrell provides us great flexibility as he is an exceptional athlete who can defend multiple positions, and I know our fans will enjoy watching him in transition, with his ability to knock down the three or his talent to be aggressive and creating off the dribble for himself or others. His exceptional work ethic and attention to detail will be contagious to our younger players. ”
