Believe it or not, but the high school baseball playoffs are right around the corner – like just a couple week away.

It feels like we just started the season, but yet here we are with a Power 5 – one of the final ones that we will have in this rapidly ending regular season.

POWER 5 RANKINGS – April 2, 2024

1. CCA – The Lions keep their top spot in the Power 5 – continuing to push past each opponent in their way on their push to being a top seed in the Division IV Select State Playoffs. The Lions have so many arms. It’s a shame the LHSAA doesn’t prioritize Division IV Select Baseball enough to give them a shot to be in a playoff bracket with 3-game series’. Umpire shortage my hiney.

2. Assumption – The Stangs are hot. They have now won 6 games in a row and they are the only team in our local 4A district without a loss. Coach Coddou’s team battles. They have a lineup full of scrappy dudes 1-through-9 who give hard-fought at-bats and they compete on the mound. They will not be a fun team to see in the 3-game series in Division II Non-Select.

3. Vandebilt – The Terriers have gotten out of their rough pre-Easter gauntlet schedule and have crossed over to the other side. It was either they or South Terrebonne for this No. 3 spot in this week’s Power 5. They lead the Gators by 4 runs in the bottom 8 right now in a game suspended by darkness. Assuming they hold on and win that one, that’s why they earned this spot in the rankings.

4. South Terrebonne – The Gators probably get the raw end of the deal in the rankings this week. They have played really well in recent weeks and probably don’t deserve to drop a few spots. But with Assumption white hot and Vandebilt leading them by 4 runs in the 8th inning, it was tough to go any other way. I know this: Coach Barba’s team is going to be ready for the playoffs – they always are. And right now, no one in our area is as hot as Logan Mallard is.

5. E.D. White – The Cardinals get back into the Power 5 this week after winning 3 of 4, including a win over CCA. The Cardinals are trying to find their identity and are trying to be more consistent. But right now, we put them over Thibodaux and H.L. Bourgeois for the last spot in the rankings because they are in great position with the playoffs near, though both the Tigers and Braves could very easily have gotten on the list, as well!
