One of the best players in the state of Louisiana has her senior season in limbo after suffering a severe knee injury this summer.
Vandebilt Catholic senior standout Makayla Charles confirmed to By-U Sports that she is out with a torn ACL, an injury she sustained earlier this summer in a game.
Charles is arguably the top returning local player. She was the MVP of the All-Region Team this past season and is a Nicholls commitment.
She told By-U Sports that doctors have told her that if her rehabilitation goes right, there is a chance she can return in 6 months. Coach Jerwaski Coleman said Charles would only be considered to return to the lineup in the back-end of the 2024-2025 season once she is fully cleared by her doctors, adding that her long-term health is the only priority.
Without Charles, the Terriers still have a loaded roster, but losing Charles is a big blow.
She is a dominant two-way player who controls games both inside and out. She started her career primarily as a post player, but has evolved to become a guard with an elite outside game, but also the ability to back down smaller defenders into the post. Because of her roots as a post player, Charles is also an elite rebounder.
As a defender, Charles is excellent on the ball and is one of the top defenders in the area. It is because of that athleticism that she earned the offer from Nicholls, whom she committed to earlier this year.
