One of the bright minds in the Bayou Region basketball scene has joined the girls’ basketball staff at Vandebilt Catholic.
Houma native Nate Frye informed By-U Sports this past weekend that he has joined the Lady Terriers’ staff – a move that he said he’s excited for with the 2024-2025 season here.
Frye was an exceptional multi-sport standout athlete at Houma Christian who went on to be a multi-year starter at UNO, helping lead the team to the NCAA Tournament.
He briefly played professional basketball overseas before returning home to become the head boys’ basketball coach at Houma Christian School for a stint before opening the Alpha Omega Training Academy, where he works with youth student-athletes, helping to foster their skills.
With Vandebilt, Frye will be joining a program hungry for a title. The Terriers have arguably the most talented team in the area, and will be one of the teams on the short list in Division II Select. The Terriers had a great chance to win the Championship last season, but did not get the chance, forfeiting their playoff spot before the State Semifinals due to a self-reported LHSAA violation.
That team had just one senior, which means that this year’s team is loaded, though they will be without standout senior and Nicholls commitment Makayla Charles for a lot – if not all of – the season with a severe knee injury. But the Terriers do still have tons of talent and high-end players, which will make them a threat to chase the title – even if Charles is not able to return to the lineup.
Frye said he did not think high school coaching would be in the cards for him at this stage in his life, but added that the Vandebilt opportunity was too good to pass up. He said he is super excited to work with the team and help them on their quest to winning the State Championship.
