We have a problem, folks.
We have a Power 5 that comes out each week, but right now locally, we have more than 5 teams who deserve a spot.
We’re doing the best that we can, but this one admittedly isn’t easy.
Here’s our Power 5 rankings.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL POWER 5 RANKINGS – January 1, 2025
1. Vandebilt – The Terriers head into 2025 leaking a little oil but with head-to-head wins over both Terrebonne and H.L. Bourgeois – both on the road, we can’t lift them from their top spot. Vandebilt is going to be OK, but the blueprint is somewhat out for what can give them problems in the postseason – they lost consecutive games to quality teams both with large post players.
2. H.L. Bourgeois – The Braves are 10-8 after getting past South Lafourche, Assumption and Central Catholic at the CORE Holiday Invitational. Games with Madison Prep and Brusly now will give the team greater power point earning opportunities heading into the start of the New Year, but goodness, that schedule those guys play is brutal.
3. South Lafourche – The Tarpons have solidified their spot in the Power 5. The Tarpons were tied with H.L. Bourgeois with 3 minutes left in the game before losing a close game. They then got a signature win 24 hours later in a thriller against Terrebonne. Sitting at 9-1 going into 2025, the Tarpons are in a great position to win 20+ games and to potentially host an opening-round game in Division I Non-Select if they can stay hot.
4. Terrebonne – The Tigers went 2-1 at the CORE Holiday Invitational and could have moved up to the No. 3 spot had they held on against South Lafourche. We have a dilemma. I think Ellender is playing great basketball right now. But Terrebonne beat them by 10+ points head-to-head. And E.D. White deserves a spot in the poll, too. So we had to get creative with the final few spots.
T5. E.D. White – I just couldn’t leave either Ellender or E.D. White out. So we put them both in and give ourselves some time to sort this out. The Cardinals are 4-1 and are playing good basketball, sweeping through their home tournament with 2 quality wins. The Cardinals are also going to get even better as they get healthy and get pieces back from football who are still out dinged up.
T5. Ellender – The Patriots are playing some really good ball. They went 3-0 at a weekend tournament and have pushed themselves into the Top 10 in Division II Non-Select. Ellender is young, but just like last season, they are getting better and better as the season goes on.
