Two weeks ago, Nicholls showed they had closed the gap and got closer to McNeese, losing a close, hard-fought game in Lake Charles.
Today, they got over the hump and took down the dragon that Will Wade has built.
The Colonels beat McNeese 71-63 on Saturday, ending McNeese’s 19-game Southland Conference winning streak and handing the team its first conference loss of the season.
The Colonels controlled the game and mostly led throughout, leading by 7 at half, then withstanding several second-half runs to survive and score the signature win, improving to 13-9 on the season and 7-4 in league play. The Cowboys are now 10-1 in Southland action.
Nicholls had 4 players in double figures in the game, led by guard Michael Gray, who made play after play down the stretch, scoring a game-high 20 points, including 4 made 3-pointers. Nicholls shot 11-of-22 from the 3-point line in the win. McNeese did not make a 3, shooting 0-of-12.
The win was the biggest of the season for Nicholls and part of a doubleheader sweep. The Nicholls women also took care of business and rolled, scoring a 5th-straight win, topping McNeese 84-67.
