Nicholls’ ride at the Southland Conference Tournament is over.
The Colonels lost to Lamar 58-55 on Tuesday night, ending the team’s season in the Semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Nicholls started out the game smoking hot, using an early surge to take a double-digit first-half lead.
But the well ran dry. Lamar tightened up its defense in the second half and held Nicholls to 6-of-27 shooting in the second half, which enabled them to slowly chip away at the lead before overtaking Nicholls in the final minutes.
The Colonels had a shot to take the lead late down 1, but a Byron Ireland layup fell off. After Lamar made a pair of free throws, Nicholls had their last chance, but Robert Brown missed an off-balance 3-pointer to secure Lamar’s win.
Brown led the Colonels with 17 points in the game. Nicholls was playing without senior All-Conference forward Jamal West Jr., who did not play in the game unexpectedly after having a big game on Monday.
The Southland Conference Tournament commentary team said West missed the game due to an unexpected family emergency. He was not on the bench during the game.
Lamar will face McNeese in the finals tomorrow – a matchup of the top two seeds in the conference.
