Houma Christian School will have a new boys’ basketball coach next season.
Coach Richard Jones told By-U Sports this week that he has agreed to part ways with the school after a three-year run with the Warriors.
Jones’ tenure with Houma Christian was highly successful. Taking over a program that had won 9 combined games in 2 seasons prior to Jones’ arrival, the Warriors won double-digit games in all 3 of Jones’ seasons, including 2-straight trips to the Division III Select State Playoffs.
Jones said he is grateful for the time he had at Houma Christian and he’s proud of what the team accomplished in his tenure.
“As I move on from my role as head boys’ basketball coach, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude,” Jones said. “This program has been driven by passion and dedication, and I am proud of everything we accomplished together. I have always been my genuine and my authentic self, and that’s what I’ll continue to do.”
With the Warriors, Jones led with passion, helping to rebuild the program.
He worked hard to take the program from a rough patch and used his hard work and dedication to get the team to competitiveness, having successful seasons and also competing favorably – even often against teams sometimes at much higher classifications.
This past season, Houma Christian competed in one of the best 2A districts in the state and made the postseason, despite having to play through injuries and with several pieces of the rotation out for several games.
Jones always had his teams ready to compete and play at a high level, saying that he prepared for each opponent with intricate detail, giving players scouting reports and doing everything he could to give the kids an edge – something that he said rubbed off onto his players and made the group gritty over his tenure.
Jones said he was not going to rule out coaching in the future, but said he wants some time to weigh his options and see what the future has in store.
He said he wants to thank several people for their support throughout his time on Valhi Drive.
“Thank you to my family for your unwavering support, and to my players and fellow coaches for their hard work and commitment,” Jones said. “I leave with cherished memories and wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.”
