2 key pieces to Nicholls’ women’s basketball team are entering the NCAA Transfer portal.
Graduate senior Elli Garnett and sophomore Tabby Curtis both announced their intentions to enter the portal – dealing a significant blow to the Colonels who hoped to maybe have both players return next season.
Garnett transferred to Nicholls before last season. She started the season slow, but really picked up steam late. She averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and was a facilitator for the Colonels as a point forward. Garnett was listed as a senior all season but has a season of eligibility as a graduate senior due to the COVID eligibility freeze.
In losing Curtis, the Colonels lost a big-time playmaker and scorer who has enjoyed success in Thibodaux. Curtis had almost identical stat lines in her freshman and sophomore seasons, averaging 10.6 points per game as a freshman, then 10.5 points per game last year as a sophomore.
Curtis was an explosive scorer who had a huge role on the Colonels’ team.
Coach Justin Payne said last week that he would hold exit meetings but he hoped to have all of the team’s returnees back, though he understood that in the current NCAA climate, that was not likely.
He did say that the Colonels will be aggressive in recruiting in their own right and will try and bring in the best talent that they can.
