A Hall of Fame basketball coach has possibly coached his final game.
Pope John Paul High School announced today that legendary coach Jay Carlin will not be back with the school next season, ending his two-year run with the program.
Carlin is a Hall of Fame coach who has won several championships throughout his career. He had a long, storied run at Salmen that spanned decades. Many do not realize that he also had a short, but highly successful stint at South Lafourche to start his career.
Carlin retired from Salmen in 2019, but then came out of retirement in 2023 to get back on the sidelines with Pope John Paul. He enjoyed two winning seasons with the program.
Carlin has close to 1,000 wins in his career. His team was 14-12 this past season and made the playoffs in Division III Select.
Pope John Paul’s administration applauded the work that Carlin did with the school in a release issued to announce that he would not be back for a third season. It did not specify whether Carlin was again retiring, simply just announcing that he had left his position with the school.
