A local standout is going to play her college basketball at Nicholls State University.

Vandebilt standout guard Tyanna Stewart committed to Nicholls tonight, giving a big local piece to coach Justin Payne and his staff.

Stewart is a 5-foot, 9-inch combo guard who can score at all 3 levels and is a tenacious defender. Stewart has shot up recruiting boards in recent months and has started to collect offers – both for her work with Vandebilt but also on the AAU circuit with Louisiana United.

Stewart said she chose Nicholls because she likes the coaching staff and players and she wants to play close to home.

Stewart keeps going what is becoming a local pipeline. E.D. White guard Caroline Adams was a true freshman last season at Nicholls and Stewart’s Vandebilt teammate Makayla Charles just signed with Nicholls and will join the team next season.

Stewart is a 2-time state champion. She was a starter on a Vandebilt team that won the Division II Select State Championship this past season – her junior year. She also won the Class 4A State Championship in shot put.

Stewart will be a senior next school year and will have one more full athletic year of competition before heading to Thibodaux.
