The 2025 high school football season is getting close.

As we get ourselves ready for the Friday Night Lights, we are going to do a season preview on ALL of our local teams.

So let’s dive in. We are going from south to North on Bayou Lafourche before we jump to Terrebonne and do the same. We will close with Assumption. We have South Lafourche and Central Lafourche down, so today, we jump up the Bayou to Thibodaux and get E.D. White with the Thibodaux Tigers up on deck.

Let’s go.

E.D. WHITE CARDINALS

2024 record: 11-3

Head coach: Kyle Lasseigne

High Point of 2024: The Journey: E.D. White had a magical season last fall, pushing all the way to the Division II Select State Championship Game. The Cardinals won 3 playoff games to get there and were just a couple bounces of the ball away from bringing home the big trophy, losing a very tough, hard-fought game with Shaw in the finals.

Low Point of 2024: The Ending: Look, it was an amazing season for E.D. White last fall and no one can take anything away from any team in the state that finishes as a State Runner-Up. But to make it to the Dome and come up just a hair short of your goal hurts. And what hurts even more for E.D. White is that there were a couple of uncharacteristic things that happened in that game that helped the outcome go Shaw’s way with a few ball-handling miscues and a couple mental mistakes.

Key Returnees: Quarterback Grant Barbera, halfback Carter Douglas, receiver Reece Lafont, linebacker Charlie Diedrich, defensive back Quinn Sternfels, among others

Breakout player: Offensive lineman Coltyn Duplantis – A sensational standout football player last year as an 8th grader at E.D. White, it’s highly likely that Coltyn will be playing starter’s snaps on Friday nights this fall for E.D. White on one of the two lines. He’s a big body who is athletic and physical. He’s going to be a big-time player and a guy that colleges are going to be calling on sooner rather than later.

Key to 2025: Riding the wave – E.D. White is going to be a very good football team in 2025. I don’t think anyone in our area thinks otherwise. But the Cardinals do have some inexperienced pieces on the defense and a brutally tough non-district schedule that could dig the team a little bit of a hole if the pieces don’t gel in the first month of the season. But for E.D. White this fall, I think the goal is going to be pretty simple: Get in, make sure you’re playing your best in Week 11 and go attack. This team will be better in November than it is in September and look, that’s more than OK. Last year, Cecilia won a State Championship as an 18-seed.

Casey’s Call: The Cardinals are going to be explosive on offense. This is going to be an offense that puts the ball in the air as much as we have seen from them in recent years with Barbera back and some skilled playmakers on the outside. But the big key that will decide if this is a good or a great team will be whether or not the Cardinals can break in some new starters on defense and have them find their footing. Another big key will be special teams. E.D. White has been dominant in that phase for years with Ty Powell capable of making both long field goals and also flipping the field on punts and kickoffs. With him gone, that advantage is not nearly as tilted in the Cardinals’ favor. E.D. White will be solid. But there are a few question marks. My money is still on a team that makes a deep playoff run.
