What a week.
South Lafourche got a win over Assumption on Friday night, cruising to a 4-3 on the season in a 55-28 win.
It was a wild week. But here’s our 5 takes.
5 TAKES AS TARPONS BEAT ASSUMPTION IN DISTRICT
TAKE 1: THRILLED FOR COACH YOUNG, COACH SANAMO: South Lafourche got a big win during a wild week, having to navigate through Fall Break, a suspended coach and a whirlwind of drama. I could not be happier for Coach Scott Sanamo who did an amazing job pinch hitting for Young, and I couldn’t be happier for Coach Young himself who was able to finally exhale after a long week on Friday night seeing his team get a big win. The worst is now behind you guys.
TAKE 2: CHUBBY T … TO THE HOUSE: Terrance Pitre had 7 catches for north of 200 yards and multiple scores on Friday. Defenses know he’s getting the ball and it just doesn’t matter. This kid needs offers. What more do we need to see?
TAKE 3: DRAY DAY/DRAY DAY: With Meatheat on the shelf with a bum ankle, there were concerns about South Lafourche’s ability to run the football effectively. Those concerns were eased early and often with Dray Hughes having a big day. It’s a different style of running, but it was effective. And heck, how about that offensive line, too? They made it happen. They always do.
TAKE 4: MASTERFUL PERFORMANCE FROM THE STRIPES: This will not be taken at face value because haters will say that I’m only saying this because South Lafourche won (which is not at all the case), but the officiating crew did an outstanding job tonight and were absolute professionals. My days of asking coaches about officiating are done, but there would have been no drama tonight. Coach Sanamo and Assumption coach Wil Broussard both would have agreed that that crew did an absolutely masterful job handling that game and that stage. Given who the white hat official was and knowing who he is as a person, it’s of no surprise. All class. True pro.
TAKE 5: ASSUMPTION HAS SOME DUDES: Look, it’s not the best Assumption team this fall. There’s no secrets about that. But the Mustangs do have some dudes. They have a very good quarterback in the Willoughby kid, and they have quick, athletic backs and receivers. Give Coach Broussard some time. That crew is going to be OK.
TAKE 6: TWO PLAYS THE MUSTANGS WOULD LIKE TO HAVE BACK: There were two huge plays that swung this game. First, the snap over the head of the Assumption running back, which put them behind the chains and cost them points. Next, the fumble deep in Tarpons territory that gave the ball back to South Lafourche. That’s 2 scoring drives washed. Put points up there, it’s a different game. Coach Broussard will lose sleep over those.
TAKE 7: JOSH MACK THROWS A GORGEOUS BALL: So much love goes to South Lafourche’s weapons that we forget how damn good a football player Josh Mack is. Some of those deep balls he threw tonight were dropped into a bucket. That kid is a Saturday player too. He is a special talent.
TAKE 8: YAIR TORRES HAVE A DAY: Yair Torres had a huge day in the South Lafourche secondary. He came up into the box and made plays and he also was good in coverage. Yair has had an awesome season flying under the radar for the Tarpons defense. Also shoutout to Joao Araujo for some big-time open field tackles tonight as well.
