H.L. Bourgeois will be looking for a new head football coach for the second time this offseason.

Athletic Director Andrew Caillouet confirmed to By-U Sports today that football coach Stanley Smith resigned from his position this morning.

Smith was hired this past offseason with skins on the wall.

He was a State Championship coach who has a decorated resume. He said he was excited to coach in Gray – a program that has enjoyed success but it hasn’t been sustained.

He was scheduled to replace Sterling Washington, who resigned at the end of last season.

Caillouet said that Smith accepted a job at Richwood High School which is closer to his home in the Monroe area. Caillouet said he and school administration tried to get him to stay, but he opted to return home.

“He was doing a great job with our program and our young coaches,” Caillouet said. “We’re sad to see him go but he was doing what was best for his family.”

Caillouet said Javon Yarbrough is going to be the team’s interim coach.

Administration will decide whether to do another search or whether to run with Yarbrough for the 2026 season.
