It’s football season so it’s time for our first 5 takes. We will do something different. Instead of giving 5 takes (which we never do), we will give 3 takes each on each team we saw tonight.
So let’s roll.
5 TAKES FROM THE SOUTH LAFOURCHE JAMBOREE
H.L. BOURGEOIS
TAKE 1: They have some playmakers – The Braves have some dudes. I like that quarterback. I like those backs. I like those receivers. There is a lot to like there. They did a few things to shoot themselves in the foot to stall drives. But I think Coach Munchie will find a lot to love from that jamboree. I also loved that tempo offense, too. I think that’s a weapon early in the season especially.
TAKE 2: Joh Joh is a special talent – H.L. Bourgeois standout Joh’neares Jones is a special talent. He had a massive summer on the camp circuit and is getting attention. He carried that success into the jamboree and was all over the field making plays. He will be one of the top guys in our area this season.
TAKE 3: Trench play was solid – Look, facing a triple option offense on a short week where there was a ton of rain is not easy by any stretch of the imagination. But the Braves handled the situation well. It was a 13-0 loss on the scoreboard, but a couple plays go differently and that game looks different.
E.D. WHITE
TAKE 1: Vicknair a smooth customer – There were so many questions about whether Grant Barbera’s absence would leave a hole in the E.D. White offense. Quarterback Alex Vicknair has stepped in and has been excellent. He made a mistake or two putting the ball on the ground (more about that later), but he made good reads, and was more than solid.
TAKE 2: Keep the ball off the carpet – The first half of the jamboree, E.D. White executed their offense very well. But in the second half, the ball hit the turf way too much. Running that offense, you have to know there will be a couple ball handling mistakes here and there. But 2 turnovers in a 15-minute period isn’t going to make anyone happy in Cardinal Land.
TAKE 3: Winners win – E.D. White got stuck in a few bad situations, giving up a few big plays and shooting themselves in the foot with a few turnovers. But they showed an ability to move onto the next play no matter the situation. That is what good teams do.
SOUTH LAFOURCHE
TAKE 1: You have to score the football – Look, the fans in the comments can bark about the Tarpon offense until the cows come home. But the reality is that South Lafourche pushed the ball into plus territory in every drive but one on Friday. You have to finish drives. You got down close one time and missed a field goal. You had a go-ball and missed a dude wide open for a TD. You got inside the 5 and got stuffed. Clean up those things and it’s a different story. BUT, you also didn’t finish drives last week against Walker, so it is now becoming a trend.
TAKE 2: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – I think the Tarpons got out of Friday’s jamboree mostly injury free, but they had a ton of cramps. Look, it’s hot. It’s going to be hot next week. It’s going to be hot until mid-October. That’s not changing. What does need to change is the preparation during the week.
TAKE 3: Defense needs to limit the explosives – The South Lafourche defense won a lot of snaps on Friday. But the ones they lost were just plays that were way too big. You can’t let up 30-40 or even 50 and 60 yard plays. The tackling angles weren’t always there and sometimes the attempts to tackle just weren’t good enough. It happens. Lots of new guys in new spots. But you have to clean that up.
TERREBONNE
TAKE 1: You answered the bell – Coach Tyler Lewis said that a concern coming into this week was his team’s ability to be physical against South Lafourche. You answered the call. The Tigers gave up some yards, but never broke. They gave up some busts, but never gave up big, big plays. Coach Lewis was happy with that after the game. He should be. That’s as good of an offensive line as you will see.
TAKE 2: Cagle a player – Terrebonne has skill dudes all over the field still. We loved what we saw from Diggs, Ruffin, Willis, Lewis, Parker and so many others. But Chase Cagle is a player. It’s hard to be a varsity quarterback at any age. But at just age 14, Cagle commanded the huddle and was excellent. The touchdown pass he threw through contact was special. Keep working guys. That was nice to see.
TAKE 3: Clean football – Terrebonne struggled big-time early in the season with penalties last year. That was not of consequence last year. They played good, clean and disciplined football on Friday. With some of their star power now in college football, they need to do those little things. On Friday night, they did.
